Organizing Organizing is the art of finding a good home for everything in your home or office. Being organized does not mean that everything is color coded, labeled, alphabetical or lined up at right angles. Being organized means having access to things you need, and being able to look around your space and relax. For some people, this means having things out—on shelves, on hooks, on the walls, etc. For some people, this means hidden away out of view. Most people have some systems that work for you—you may not be ableto find your keys, but you put the drycleaning in a bag on the front door and take it on your way to work. My job is to work with you and find out what works for you, what doesn’t work for you, and then extend the former. This is a philsosophy that is best explicated by Julie Morgenstern in Organizing From the Inside Out. Becoming organized is an ongoing process of trying and tweaking. Most people try to get organized by buying organization systems—binders with pre-defined categories, trays, clips, color coders, etc. I believe that any system will work if you are committed to it, the trick is to implement a system that works for you. Keeping organized is something you have to work at on a daily (or perhaps weekly) basis, but it shouldn’t be a full time job. I also rely heavily on methods outlined by David Allen in Getting Things Done. In that book, Allen not only details a workflow method (do/delegate/defer), and a way of understanding how we process actions in order to work efficiently, but a flexible system of organizing papers and work areas to facilitate concentration, productivity, and keep everything organized and under control. As with clutter clearing, before working with a professional you should endeavour to do it yourself. Trying and failing tells you what doesn’t work, and opens the door to what will. I am available to help organized homes, offices and home offices. I work with papers and with things. I can also help you organize your computer—to implement a working file structure, a back up plan, and I can also help implement financial software and/or online banking if that is helpful. |
